Why are we now being charged for Web-based services?
As much as we would like to be able to continue to offer Web-based access to the alumni accounts for free, unfortunately the cost of providing this technology for over 9,000 users is beyond our capacity to continue. Rensselaer cannot possibly compete with commercial service providers like Yahoo or Hotmail.
We want to offer our alumni the best possible product and service at the lowest possible cost, so we felt the best compromise was to offer the 1 GB (a new enhancement) account at a very nominal fee of $14.95 per year (that's only $1.25 per month) while still offering a free forwarding service for those who choose not to pay for their alumni address at all.
If we did not charge this small fee, we would only be able to offer the forwarding service. In fact, most of our peer institutions only offer free forwarding.
We thought our alumni should at least have the chance to continue to use the Web-based option if they wanted to.
We hope our users can be understanding of this need to charge a small fee, and know that we are trying to offer the best possible service to our valued alumni.
