Servathon 2008
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Each year, Servathon mobilizes thousands of volunteers to complete more than 11,000 hours of service in one marathon day of service. Servathon is a powerful demonstration of commitment to the Greater Washington Region that raises awareness of the importance of volunteerism. The servathon project that our group worked on was participating in a major classroom painting project at Powell Elementary to prepare for the
2008-2009 school year. Our group helped repaint shelving and lockers in
2 classrooms.

Holiday Gathering at the Criss Residence
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Bill ’68, ’69 and Judy (Russell Sage ’69) Criss graciously welcomed the Chapter into their home for an afternoon of wine and cheese. It was a great chance for alumni to catch up with one another during the bustle of the holiday season.
For the wine connoisseurs we held a wine tasting contest, featuring "Which alumnus/a can decifer the difference between red and white wine?" in a blind taste test. The winner of the 1st Annual DC Area RPI Wine Tasting Contest was Darrell Hoffman '68 (pictured below).

If your lab partner makes you a compound of Nickel, Cerium, Arsenic, and Sulfur, what message is he/she secretly trying to send you? If you can answer this question, you would have been an asset to your team at the “Battle of the Nerds” Quiz Bowl, held on October 24th at Washington DC’s Gordon Biersch Brewery.
The competition was heated as RPI battled it out with alumni groups from Georgia Tech, MIT, Berkeley/NAS-Mirzayan Fellows, and sundry friends and associates. Alumni reinforced old connections and made new ones over the sometimes obscure, but consistently clever and light-hearted questions provided by Quizzo Master Neal Racioppo (dcquizzo.blogspot.com). Over 60 participants attended, enjoying Gordon Biersch’s beer flight sampler and the occasional answer hint or two from the servers. As the night progressed, enthusiastic cheers could be heard as the teams dug deep for the random bits of knowledge that might bring them one step closer to Nerd Victory!
The night culminated with the top three teams (Georgia Tech, MIT, and a mongrel team including RPI members) going head-to-head to see who could name the most Spielberg-directed movies. At last, the clincher came down to associating Spielberg with Hook, but not Jaws 2 or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! The victors, whom will be featured on the DC Quizzo Master’s Blog site, were Larry Craig’s Tap Dancers, a team including Ben Hom (RPI ’89), Sonya Mazumdar (RPI ’05), Bradley Hague (George Washington University), Aalok Mehta (Rice), and Kelly Gravuer (Brown).
Ben Hom noted that he “had a great time - after we got over the shock of the first question, everyone did a great job of complementing each other's knowledge, with everyone pitching in to help. We needed this, as the other teams were really tough, especially with the final tiebreaker question listing Steven Spielberg's movies!”
Abundant thanks are due to the following people, without whose enthusiastic efforts this event would not have been possible: Susan Haight, Jillian Degregorio, and Meredith Hughes (RPI Alumni Office), Christina Bapst, Bill Criss, David Gertler, Anton Johnson, Deirdre Jones, Chuck Lapinski, Sonya Mazumdar, Nagesh Rao, and Larina Riley (RPI-DC-Baltimore Alumni Chapter), David Nelson, Jacob Young and Tiffany Vliek (Georgia-Tech DC Alumni Club), Jenny Anderson and Anne Street (MIT DC Club), Rebecca Burka (NAS-Mirzayan Fellows Coordinator), Abbie Longero (Gordon Biersch Brewery), Quizzo Master Neal Racioppo, and our participants for the fun-filled night.
