May 15 - RPI Reception at the American Institute of Architects National Convention in Boston, MA

June 22 - Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Bronx Zoo

Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Bronx Zoo
Sunday, June 22, 2008, at 8:30 a.m.

Please join the Rensselaer Clubs of Westchester, New York City/Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the world-famous Bronx Zoo. We welcome Rensselaer alumni, current and incoming students, and their families to join us for this fun-filled event! This will be a great opportunity to meet and share Rensselaer experiences with your fellow alumni, these outstanding students, and their families, as we enjoy a relaxing day at the Bronx Zoo.

Thanks to our very own Bronx Zoo "insider," Rensselaer alumna and Trustee Paula Simon ’68, we have arranged for an exceptional package of events for our guests to enjoy. The events include:

  • Early admission to the Zoo at 8:30 a.m. (one and a half hours prior to opening to the public). We will meet at 8:15 a.m. in the Southern Boulevard parking lot.  Please drive into the employee entrance at Grote Street, which is off of Southern Boulevard.
  • An elegant buffet breakfast at the Zoo Terrace to start our day.  The deluxe breakfast will feature scrambled eggs, french toast with cinnamon, hot and cold cereal, bacon strips, home fries, mini danish, bagels, mini-muffins, fresh fruit, orange juice, Green Mountain regular and decaf coffee, and herbal teas.
  • Early and free admission to the Children's Zoo at 9:30 a.m. for Rensselaer alumni, students and families only.  This cozy, three-acre setting is a fantasy for young explorers.
  • Celebrate and experience the opening of the Bronx Zoo's highly anticipated new exhibit – Madagascar! Meet the unique wildlife of the world’s “eighth continent” and enjoy special activities the day of the alumni event.
  • The Bronx Zoo Quest – a special educational experience for children ages 7 to 12 and their parents.
  • Free Admission to the award-winning Congo Gorilla Forest Exhibit, including a visit with the newest gorilla babies and a seven minute film that transports visitors to the central African rain forest.
  • Tiger Mountain, in the ancient Amur Valley, with dramatic close-ups of tigers, their training and behaviors. Don't miss the Tiger Enrichment sessions at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Free Admission to the Butterfly Garden, with more than 1,000 North American butterflies.
  • Primate training at the Monkey House at 3:30 p.m.
  • Free admission to the Skyfari, Zoo Shuttle, and Bengali Express Monorail.

Alumni, family, and friends will enjoy admission to all of the exhibits in the Zoo for the entire the day. Don’t miss spotting snow leopards in the naturalistic Himalayan Highlands Habitat, or experiencing almost an acre of an indoor Asian rain forest! No matter where you explore at the Bronx Zoo, you’ll be bound to find the world’s most amazing wildlife.

Attendees will experience all of this at the discounted, all-inclusive price of $48 for dues-paying club members, $58 for non due-paying club members, $38 for students and their families, and $33 for children 12 years old and younger.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity. Space is limited, so make your reservation today. Please RSVP by June 14, 2008. For more information about this event, contact Marc Schechter '75 at marc@alum.rpi.edu.

To register with Visa or MasterCard using our secure online registration, visit https://arpinet.rpi.edu/events/. Dues-Paying Members Get Perks!
It's a fact. Dues-paying chapter members receive benefits that non dues-paying chapter members don't. We're all looking for ways to get the inside scoop, meet new people, form new career connections, attend interesting events, and save money while we're doing it. Well, all of these benefits can be yours by sending in your NYC Metro Alumni Chapter dues today.

As a dues-paying chapter member, you'll receive discounted rates to most chapter events, first preference at limited seating events, and you'll be supporting chapter initiatives. Dues enable your local chapter to continue offering the best career networking events, unique cultural events, and member exclusive communications. You'll also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you're helping to defray the costs associated with bringing you top tier chapter events and communications.

Chapter dues are $25 per year. Recent grads ('97-'07) pay only $10. Fifty Year Club Members are free. To renew your membership, or to begin enjoying dues-paying advantages, send a check made payable to “Rensselaer Chapter of New York City” to Ray Weisner ’75 at 136 East 36th Street, Apartment 11A, New York, NY 10016.

NYC Metro Volunteer Corner
It’s never too early to get involved.

Young Alumni Involvement Opportunities Available

Are you a recent grad who would like to get involved? There are a number of volunteer opportunities to suit your interests and schedule. We are currently looking for some young alums to participate in the student outreach program. Andy Woo '00, manager of the New York City Alumni Admissions volunteer program, is seeking alumni to mentor NYC students in areas such as engineering, marketing, and science. These are just a few suggested areas – volunteers in all special interest areas are welcome. Volunteers could have the opportunity to help students compete in local events such as FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST LEGO League (FLL), or you could be a judge at NYC Science and Engineering Fair!

Andy would like to take this program to new heights and would really like to hear from you. Please e-mail him today at wooa@alum.rpi.edu so he can gauge interest and move forward with planning.

Hosts Needed for Student Visits to NYC Events

This spring, two student groups join us from Troy for some chapter events. Based on the success of those events, we are planning to bring more student groups down this coming academic year. We need alumni volunteers to join us in hosting the students for panel discussions of life after RPI, if you are interested in taking part in a student visit to New York, please contact Michelle Lim '06 at michellelim3@gmail.com.
