Alumni Cooking Trip to Tuscany, Italy , June 2007
Michael Wellner '64, Tour Program Coordinator

Group Dinner
The group enjoys the fruits of their labor.

Twenty-one alums and friends spent one of the most glorious weeks of their lives at a five-star deluxe private villa ten minutes outside of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany. It is no exaggeration to say that it was everyone’s dream come true: having a private chef to give us five separate cooking lessons; wine tastings; cheese samplings; olive oil tastings; a class on the fine points of making balsamic vinegar; visits to to-rated restaurants and vineyards; and sightseeing excursions to such storied places as Siena, Pisa, Volterra, Cinque Terre, Lucca, and more.

Most of the group flew directly on Delta’s new non-stop from New York to Pisa, only a half hour away from Lucca. A few of us spent a few days before in Florence, the eternally beautiful city on the Arno River.

Florence is literally filled with artwork, and could well be a destination in its own right. But for us – on this trip – it was only a prelude to an experience that none of us will ever forget.

From Florence we hopped on the local train to Lucca, where a private car met us and transferred us to the private villa that would be home for the next week. As usual, the RPI weather gods were smiling on our group, and we had hardly any rain to spoil a perfect week.

Without question the highlight of this fantastic trip were the cooking lessons: from the very first morning when we all put on our red and white Rensselaer Alumni Association aprons, the kitchen was the hub of our activities. Whether it was making pasta, brownies, salads, or sauces – all from scratch, with ultra-fresh ingredients – or preparing shrimp, fish, or pork, everyone quite literally “got their hands dirty.” The pictures tell a good part of the story, but they cannot convey the pure fun that everyone had.

Cooking Lessons
Private cooking lessons were the highlight of the trip.

Dancing Lessons
Dancing lessons on the veranda.

And all the excursions were simply wonderful.  Again – the pictures cannot do justice to all the sights that we encountered, from the fabled Leaning Tower of Pisa, to the ancient walled city of Siena, the Etruscan pre-Roman town of Volterra, the magic five towns that comprise the Cinque Terre, and the very upscale city of Lucca, every day was a treat.

Finally, before we packed our bags and began to head home, we all participated in our very own bocce ball tournament, which produced endless rounds of amusement and laughter, and a mixed doubles championship team that included none other than our own Mike Wellner!

The best summary that I can provide is simply that everyone, upon leaving the villa on the last day, said in unison: "Where are we going next year?"
