1994: Rensselaer 1976 ClassNotes

March 1994

June 1994

Congratulations to Sam Stein on his appointment as chief financial officer of Luxtec Corp, a 12-year-old fiber optic-based surgical equipment firm. Luxtec is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Sam was at One Write Plus Inc, a Nashau, New Hampshire company which produced financial software.

I encourage each of you to call, write, or fax information on your current activities to be shared with your fellow classmates. It's difficult to write a column without any input.

September 1994

Thanks for the response to my plea for input in the last column. I heard from Jim Kaeli, who is presently head of Engineering at R. R. Donnelley Northeastern Division, located in Lancaster, PA. He prints The NY Times Magazine, TV Guide, most of the East Coast phone books, specialty catalogs, and many newspaper inserts at this location. Jim is an active member of the adjunct faculty at Penn State University, where he teaches undergraduate courses in management and operations. He recently published an article on CIM in Industrial Engineering. Jim and his wife Kathy (Princeton) have two kids, Jeff (10) and Paige (6) and live in Lancaster. Dave Kurzweg has a new job as Business Development Manager for Rust Environment & Infrastructure, in Naperville, IL. He is looking forward to the next reunion in '96.

Kevin Nicholas writes from Olongapo, Philippines where he has been for the past five years. He lived through the big earthquake in 1990 and the eruption of Mt Pinatubo (one year later) only fifteen miles from his home. He is Director of the Calvary Chapel Bible school and is acting as a computer consultant helping other missionaries with the technology. He hopes to get on the Internet through PhilNet. Kevin lives in Olongapo City, right next to what use to be the US Subic Naval Base. Linda DeMarco joined the staff at New Milford Hospital as its first female oncologist. She previously was with the North Shore University Hospital in New York. When Linda is not examining pathology X-rays, she is sometimes looking at the tops of trees from a glider 3,000 feet off the ground. She uses the intensity of flying to balance the intensity of oncology. Linda takes to the skies from a site off Candlewood Lake, a site in Connecticut used by about 100 other glider pilots.

December 1994

Peter Alexander writes in the hope that he will stimulate other '76ers to contribute news to our column. He is still at Seragen, Inc in Hopkinton, MA (start of the Boston Marathon) and is manager of the Fermentation Development group. Seragen is a biotechnology company specializing in recombinant "fusion toxins" used in the treatment of numerous cancers and autoimmune diseases. Peter and wife Mary live in Westborough, MA with their sons, Peter (11) and Michael (9). They have enjoyed hosting foreign exchange students from Hungary, Belgium, and Switzerland. The highlights of their year were a vacation in Antigua and a camping trip at the Assateague National Seashore. Al Wargo is enjoying the milder winters in Tennessee after moving from Rochester, New York to take the job as assistant treasurer for Eastman Chemical Co reported in the March '94 class notes. His wife Patti and children Tiffany (9) and Brandon (8) agree. Congratulations to Rich Cabot and Liane Woodward who were married in the San Francisco area on August 27. They planned a European honeymoon and will return north to make their home in the Portland/Seattle area.

Robert Stuart has left Staton Hills Winery to join Knudsen Erath Winery, a leader of the Northwest wine industry, as their enologist. He is a professional member of the American Society of Enologists and produces sparkling wine with his wife, Maria, under their own Cuvee Montagne label in Salem, Oregon. Linda DeMarco makes the news again as an elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). The FACP is an honorary title recognizing achievements in internal medicine, the specialty of adult medical care. Both Linda and her husband own their own gliders (or "sailplanes") and are avid pilots. Hal Freiman also was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). He is a specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is affiliated with St Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center. Hal makes his home in Scarsdale, New York and is in private practice in New York City.

Lynn and I are excited to announce the birth of our daughter, Erika Lynn Mino, on August 8 at 6 pounds, 11.1 ounces. She joins her brother, Brandon Michael (2), who has anxiously awaited her arrival.
