1996: Rensselaer 1976 ClassNotes

March 1996

It is only a few months until our 20th reunion. If you haven't made plans yet, think about joining us the second weekend in June (7-9). Dr. Alan Meltzer will be joining us with his wife Gladys at our Saturday evening dinner. Jim Flaherty will impersonate some of his favorite political figures if he is not tied up at one of the conventions.

Douglas Dorans has started his own company, D. Dorans and Associates Inc, a consulting firm for insurance adjusters on the engineering aspects of insurance losses. Last year, he and his wife Laura went to Russia to adopt their four year old daughter, Katie (Svetlana). They found that the parent child communication gap was slightly exasperated by the fact that she only spoke Russian (and he didn't). A year later she now speaks English fluently (he doesn't yet). His family and business are located in Elgin, IL.

Robert Goldsmith left for Sydney, Australia with his family in December for a six month assignment to expand the assessment base of his firm Development Dimensions International in Pittsburg, PA. His wife, Lucy, and children Emily & Abigail (5), Matthew (4), Megan (2), and infant Oliver are down under with him. Jim Kaeli recently relocated to Harrisonburg, VA with R. R. Donnelley, the country's largest commercial printer. If you read many hard or softcover bestsellers, they're probably produced in this plant (over 150 million books are printed there annually). Jim is now Division Manufacturing Support Group Manager, and has responsibility for Engineering, Maintenance, Facilities, TQM and CIM. He and his wife, Kathy, are gradually acclimating to southern living. The kids, Jeff (11) and Paige (8), are preparing for a life of technology and love sending e-mail to their friends around the country.

Aren Horowitz sent an e-mail note to alumni_class_notes@rpi.edu (a generic address if you forget mine). He has been working for Lotus Development Corporation the last nine years as a System Architect, in a group that brings emerging technologies into their product line. His family (wife Joan; Miriam, 14; Simon, 10; and Nathan, 6) have settled in Sharon, MA about 25 miles south of Boston. Susan Lill has joined the staff of College Family Physicians. She completed her internship and residency in family practice in Ohio, spent four years with the US Public Health Service in a rural community in northwest Missouri, and has settled in the Overland Park area in Kansas with her current position. Robert Barghaus has been named senior vice president, finance and development at Labatt, USA. In his new position he will be responsible for overseeing strategic planning, finance and administration, and new volume acquisition. Bob is married with three children living in the Thiensville, Wisconsin area. Leslie MacNeil was appointed an officer at Chubb Life located in Concord, NH. He was previously a senior EDP auditor with Chubb & Son Inc. Leslie hold the insurance industry designation of Fellow, Life Management Institute, is a certified information systems auditor and a certified internal auditor. He resides in Bow, NH with his wife, Patricia and their four children. Edward Kremzier has been appointed Manager, Power Supply Administration for Eastern Utilities Associates located in West Bridgewater, MA. He is responsible for administration of power supply contracts, preparation of wholesale power bills, coordination of special power supply studies and regulatory support for their retail and wholesale electric utility subsidiaries. He previously was Supervisor of System Planning. Ed is a registered professional engineer.

Congratulations to the "most politically correct class" as determined by the judges of the Class of 1976 Reunion Parade. Jim Flaherty (as Bill Clinton) talked "President to President" with Dr R. Byron Pipes (one of the judges) surrounded by his dark shaded secret service entourage. Catherine Hettinger passed out samples of her latest invention, the "Spinfinger". Thanks to Steve Derby for organizing the Friday gathering at Holmes and Watson. Steve (also known as Gunner to his hockey teammates) is still at RPI after 24 years, although he has hung up his hockey stick. Dr. Alan Meltzer was presented with a "Class of 1976" shirt at our Saturday night dinner at the RPI Playhouse. Dr. Meltzer talked about the evolution of the large lecture approach (including the Physics Magic Show) to an interactive "studio" format. Jim Flaherty provided comic entertainment with a mock press conference with Bill Clinton and an improv version of Jeopardy with answers supplied by the audience. Pete Hart closed the evening by leading the group to sing our Alma Mater. He also directs a barbershop chorus "Friends of Harmony" in Buffalo, NY where he lives. A special thanks to Susan Moyle Lynch for providing and coordinating the staff support for our exciting weekend. Look forward to seeing you at the 25th reunion in 2001.

I believe that we had over 50 classmates return to RPI for the festivities. As for people seen at reunion weekend . . . Lisa (Hallquist) Bowlby has defected to the sales profession and is selling semiconductor production equipment for Applied Materials. Sean Corrigan has retired from the Navy Civil Engineering Corp and is Facilities Director for 31 campuses with 18,000 K thru 12th grade students in Thousand Oaks, CA. Kris Costa also made a career change from biology to Coordinator of Facilities Maintenance for the New York State Thruway. Many of us (including myself) enjoyed the clean rest stops as we drove to RPI for reunion weekend. Trudy DeGraff is still working on her PhD in computer science at RPI. During home hockey games, Trudy and husband Rick Pfeiffer operate a train horn which they donated to the Field House. She is the first woman to be qualified to fly C-130 transport aircraft to both the North and South poles. Trudy is a major in the New York National Guard and serves at their Schenectady base as aircraft commander. Rusty Gordon is an electronic commerce consultant currently working for Whirlpool in St Joseph, MI. He has been very active in recolonizing his fraternity, Chi Phi. Doc Kirchgessner distinguished himself by working on six of the seven continents and having lived on three of them. He is working for W. R. Grace supporting their petro refinery business. You may have seen Doc's scenic photos in Earth magazine. Adam Levin is decommissioning nuclear power sites. He lives in Bridgewater, CT with wife Emily and two beautiful daughters, Jennifer (12) and Elissa (10). Robert Matthews has bowled a perfect 300 both left and right handed. His day job is a property and casualty insurance actuary. Harry and Larry McElroy own a software startup they founded in Los Angeles, CA. Harry was proud of his TV star twins Loren and Meghan who appeared on "Baby Talk" with Connie Sellica and George Clooney. Mark Mulholland showed up with his arm bandaged up from contact with poison ivy while "bush hogging". He works for the Air Force at the Pentagon and tried to pass President Clinton by the Lincoln Memorial during one of their morning jogs. Michael O'Donnell is a research chemist for the Navy working on developing better paints. Robert Olson is at the US Department of State working on strategic planning. Sari Ostermayer has completed her doctorate as a psychiatrist in child psychology. Harlan Rosenthal is developing voice mail software for Dialogic. He is on his fourth job having survived two layoffs. Carl de Stefanis is at IVI International as a real estate development consultant. He lives in Pound Ridge, NY with his Swedish wife, Lean and bi-lingual daughter, Stella. Mark Stephens is working for the EPA and currently involved with closing military bases. Patrick Valiquette has been running the computer help desk at RPI for the last 15 years. He didn't make many points when his boss's boss was unable to get help for over three days.

Congratulations to Richard Cabot on the birth of his first child, Jackson William. Via Email I heard from Dave Hill. He traveled to England to help start a Habitat for Humanity group and spent some time in Japan and Taiwan working on a power plant project. Dave is working as a Automation Specialist for a Connecticut distributor with Steve Bailey '72. He is slowly making an old 1879 farmhouse in Fairfield, CT livable with wife Nina and children Justin (2) and Molly (1).
