Herbert (Bert) Raymond Flanders of Santa Clara passed away November 24 at age 84.
Born June 10, 1923 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Raymond and Elizabeth Flanders. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy in September 1941 and served in the South Pacific theater during World War II and received an honorable discharge. He then served three years in the US Navy Reserve.
Bert graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor degree in electrical engineering and accepted a job offer from Lockheed Aircraft Co. in Burbank, California. In 1959, he transferred to the newly-formed Lockheed Missile and Space Co. of Sunnyvale, from which he retired 39 years later.
Bert is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Olga Klimetz of Pittsfield, sons David of Washington, DC, Steven, and Brett, both of San Jose, and daughters-in-law Claudia and Stella He is the loving grandfather of Melissa, Evan, Liana and Sydney, and brother of Doris Martell of New Hampshire, the late Barbara Shampang, and the late Betty Harford.
A fan of Big Band music, dancing and the San Jose Sharks, Bert also enjoyed building airplane models, coin collecting, playing the piano (self-taught), discussing history and politics and, most of all, being with his family.
